Hank Paris Tournament
Bethpage started the 2009-2010 wrestling season in the Hank Paris tourney at Plainview-Old Bethpage H.S. The Golden Eagles had two champs: Dom Aspesi at 135 pounds and Ivan Dunat at 285 pounds. Returning county 3rd place finisher Jermaine John did not wrestle in this tourney bit is expected to start his season in the Bethpage Dad’s Club tourney on Saturday December 12th.

Bethpage places 3 at the Nassau County 2009 wrestling championships…Meza gets wild card as an entry to the NY State tournament.
Senior German Meza placed 3rd at 145 avenging his only loss of the season in his 3rd place match by pinning Tyler Dunne of Macarthur. His reward was a wild card entry to the NYState tournament in Albany. Congrats to German!
Sophomore Jermain John placed 3rd at 152 pounds and Senior Christian Toscano placed 4th at 119 pounds.
Bethpage placed 12th as a team in this year’s D1 county tournament.
Bethpage qualifies 9 for the Section wrestling tournament. German Meza won the qualifier so he will recieve a top 6 seed…most likely 3rd seed.

Bethpage placed 3rd as a team behind Plainedge and Calhoun. German Meza, returning all county arrives late due to the SAT schedule…allowed to wrestle in the wrestlebacks he takes 3rd at 152. Christian Toscano, expcted to do well this season with all county possibilities withdrew after an recurring shoulder injury in the semifinals. Word is he should be OK. Freshman 96 pounder Alex Houston makes it to the finals but gets pinned. He will grow into a full sized 96 or 103 pounder next year and he will be a good one. Should be a competitive year for him this season. Dennis Gonzales places 2nd also at 130 pounds and loses a tight 4-3 match. 285 pounder Dom Volpe also loses in the finals by a pin. He will improve as this season progresses. We also have another 285 pounder Ivan Dunitz who should do well this season.
Bethpage Dad’s Club tourney is this weekend…Saturday Dec 13th.

2009-2010 Membership Fundraising Drive
For Alumni Day sign-up and our annual membership fundraising drive follows below.

Once again we will schedule Alumni Day and Night on a Saturday so we have an easier time schedule.
This year’s day/night is set for January 16th. The Golden Eagles wrestling meet should end before 6 PM. W will plan to meet at Whoville on Broadway in Bethpage about 7PM. Open bar (beer and wine) from 7-10 and food as usual will be served. After 10PM is a cash bar.
As always please reach out to any former Bethpage wrestlers and family members to let them know about our club. The more people we have involved the more we can accomplish and the more enjoyable our annual get together will be. Fall 2009 Alumni Letter
I hope this email finds everyone doing well as we quickly approach another Holiday season.
Please save the date for our 2010 Alumni Day which is now set for Saturday, January 16th.
We will have wrestling all day at the high school with Bethpage wrestling 4 or 5 matches against teams from Babylon, Clarkstown South, Mepham, Locust Valley and Freeport. After wrestling is done, usually about 6PM, we will move to a local pub/restaurant for evening festivities. I will be emailing you soon with the details for Alumni Day and the form and address information for our annual fundraising effort including a modest membership fee as well as the fee for Alumni Day dinner and drinks.

Facebook can become an effective communication tool for us as we try to grow our member base and plan more events. I want to make everyone aware of the great strides Bethpage wrestling alum Bill Miller has made with his wrestling web site: www.LighthouseWrestling.com. LHW is just over a year old and it has already become one of the best wrestling web sites not only regionally but also across the nation. This site covers Long Island wrestling as well as college wrestling. Recently the site has established a strong working relationship with the likes of Cornell wrestling, USA Wrestling, the Wrestling Network and other noted organizations. In addition to online content Bill has also done some incredible live Internet broadcasts of wrestling events including the NY State 2009 Division 1 wrestling finals…which I had the pleasure of being involved with. Tonight and Sunday Bill is doing the live broadcast of an international freestyle wrestling event as the USA team will meet the Russian team at the NYAC in Manhattan. I would urge you all to visit the site and enjoy its content as well as supporting one of our wrestling alums.

FUNDRAISING SUCCESS
Thanks to last year’s successful fundraising efforts and your generosity, the Alumni club has been able to fund a few very important initiatives: - The Light is Shining: The mat spotlight that we purchased for this coming season is installed and operational. We may have to coax coach Abbs to shift a couple of home matches to night matches so we can see this spotlight and the drama/intensity it adds a wrestling match. I have seen several matches under this light in Suffolk County, and I can tell you it is a treat for the wrestlers and the fans. -Finalist Singlets were designed and purchased over the summer and they look great. We went back to the old traditional gold singlet with the new Eagle head mascot logo on the chest, “Eagles” inscribed in blue with a gold trim on the bottom of the thigh and ”BHS” bold letters again in blue with gold trim diagonally placed on the back of the singlet. We may see coach Abbs break these babies out for special dual meets. - Camp and Clinic Financial Aid: Thanks to a couple of very special alumni donations we still had enough funds available so coach Abbs could send several of our young talent to wrestling camps and clinics at Hofstra. In fact we had 7 or 8 Bethpage wrestlers attend Hofstra team camp over the summer in addition to many other camps, clinics and competitive events. As a team we were more active this off-season than I have ever seen in all my years following Bethpage wrestling. Please be sure to scroll down to the bottom of this email for details on this year’s membership fundraising drive and how to support the Alumni program in any way you can. As always, the member donation is not mandatory, we just ask you donate whatever you can and it will be appreciated.
Help us find more Alumni!
We have done our best to find and attract more wrestling alumni to attend alumni night and stay involved in this great sport. It is special when we can get a mix of classic (not using the word “old”) and younger alumni. So please do what you can to reach out to alumni and get me an email address for each so I can include them on our email announcement list. I have heard some ex-wrestlers who do not receive these emails feel that they are not invited to our events. That is NOT the case. All it means is that I do not have their email address or I do not have a correct/current address. So anything you can do to keep me informed as to changes of email address and new addresses is much appreciated.
